Summer Camp Counselor – Pat Time/ Seasonal (Summer) position – $15/hr

Job Description:

The Summer Camp Counselor oversees and manages a class of up to 20 campers in a classroom and outdoors. Each counselor must ensure children’s safety, manage children’s behavior, and act as a role model and mentor; model constructive participation in all daily activities; and work closely with the Camp Director to ensure the safety of all children. Each Counselor is expected to contribute to a working environment that is friendly, respectful, open, and honest. Counselors are responsible for implementing age-appropriate activities within a defined curriculum area for each day of camp. Counselors are responsible for providing quality care as well as a nurturing learning environment for each child.

Essential Functions

  1. Classroom or Child-Centered Responsibilities:
  • Educational Activities: Lead and facilitate learning activities, prepare materials, and provide and collect any necessary forms.
  • Implement classroom projects and activities from the camp resource library
  • Lead and oversee outdoor play activities (hiking, basketball, tennis courts, multi-purpose field, etc.)
  • Lead and oversee arts programming (music, dance, theater, etc.)
  • Assist with camper management when participating in other activities at camp, i.e., meals, pool, high ropes and low ropes challenge courses, special programming, and events.
  • Physical Environment: Create a physical space that maximizes the independence of children, provides a safe and stimulating environment, which enables effective use of space, and provides an attractive and welcoming environment by:
  • Organizing classroom space in a functional, clean, neat, and attractive way that encourages children to use materials as independently as is appropriate
  • Engage campers in outdoor educational activities that promote the scientific method (observation, measurement, experimentation) while stimulating their senses through interactive play and hands-on learning
  • Labeling spaces and materials so that it is clear to children and adults in the room where things belong
  • Displaying children’s work in a way that is attractive and informative to visitors and promotes children’s self-esteem
  • Alerting Camp Director to any concerns about cleanliness, needed repairs, or safety.
  • Create and maintain a “peace corner” where children can go to destress and relax until they are ready to rejoin the group activity.
  • Health and Safety: Enforce safety rules, participate in safety drills, intervene when children may injure themselves or others, and promptly alert the teaching team to any injury involving children or staff. Practice infection control principles (proper hand-washing, cleaning and work areas and tables, wearing of masks where applicable, etc.).
  1. Team-Centered Responsibilities:
  • Summer Camp meetings: Participate in regular group meetings for the purpose of discussing the needs of individual children, camp programming as well as summer program progress and evaluation and problem-solving.
  • Group coverage: Ensure that staff-to-child ratios are no more than 1:20. Other staff (Director or other teachers) may be called in to remain on duty if necessary, to ensure required staff-to-child ratios.
  • Activity Reports and Recordkeeping: Assist with record-keeping activities required of the group and ensure the completion of anecdotal records, physical observation, developmental observations and reports, and any other requirements listed in Activity Reports.
  1. Organization-Centered Responsibilities:
  • Training: Participate in training prior to camp start, including First Aid, CPR, and AED training.
  • Communication: Ensure quality communication and dialogue between the Camp Director, staff, and other members of Apple Ridge Farm and the community. Work with the Camp Director to identify needs, including issues with classroom management, administration, payroll, time/leave, etc., and appropriate methods for communicating with the community. Be prepared to meet regularly with staff to stay informed about the program and camp information.
  • Timeliness: Arrive at camp at 8:30 am, before the children, and be prepared to assist with camp operations and counselor responsibilities. Participate in end-of-the-day tasks, i.e., classroom cleaning, camp staff debriefing, etc.
  • Attendance: I am available through six weeks of camp and can begin work one week before training. 2023 dates: June 12th -August 28th, Monday – Friday. (7/3 & 7/4/2023, camp will be closed.)

Housekeeper / B&B Host – Part-Time /As-Needed  – $13 / hr.

Apple Ridge Farm seeks an experienced housekeeper to clean and maintain facilities and lodging areas. Hours for this position are limited and seasonal in nature. Scheduling will occur as needed on a part-time basis. 

Duties:

  • Maintaining assigned areas’ cleanliness to Apple Ridge standards and requirements.
  • Performs other duties as requested, including but not limited to sweeping, dusting, mopping, cleaning and stocking bathrooms, trash removal, recycling, etc.
  • Services guest rooms as needed in accordance with Apple Ridge Farm, Caboose Car Bed & Breakfast procedures, such as stocking guest room supplies and changing bed linens, while following company standards and safety/security procedures. 
  • In some instances, this role would also be responsible for conducting ‘deep cleaning’ activities within the guest rooms or event spaces in conjunction with volume needs or preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Secures the facility, ensuring buildings are locked/unlocked as required.
  • Ensures security of company assets.
  • Other related duties and tasks as assigned by the manager.

Requirements:

  • Previous custodial experience preferred
  • This position requires strong attention to detail and an ability to communicate effectively with team members verbally and in written form.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling greater than 50 lbs.
  • Must be available to work weekends – Flexibility is a plus!
  • Must be proficient in the use of e-mail, Google calendar, and smart-phone apps
  • Must have a smartphone with efficient cellular service
  • Must pass a successful Virginia Background Check to include violent crimes and crimes against minors
  • Must have reliable transportation

High Ropes/Team Challenge Instructor – Part Time / Seasonal – $15/hr

Apple Ridge Farm is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, youth-serving organization that transforms the lives of underserved children and families through engagement in unparalleled educational, cultural, and outdoor experiences!

We are searching for a High Ropes/Team Challenge Instructor to operate our ropes courses, including a 60 ft. climbing wall and zip line for our fun, 6-week academic summer camp in Copper Hill, VA. Transportation from Roanoke can be coordinated. Training will be provided. Must be available for High Ropes training (to be coordinated) and for camp training and summer camp June 12th- July 28th, 2023. Scheduled 24-40 hours each week. Beyond the summer, our Team Challenge Instructors have the option to continue to work on an occasional, as-needed basis as Team Challenge programs are booked. This position reports directly to the Director of Administration & Development.

Duties:

  • Perform ropes elements hazard inspections prior to climbs; report any equipment, structure, or surrounding hazard concerns to the Camp Director
  • Ensure all gear and equipment are clean, orderly, and accounted for
  • Practice and prepare for emergency procedures, such as rescues and scripted protocol for emergency response; ensuring the safety of all participants
  • Be a role model at all times! Safely perform all high ropes tasks and guide fellow staff and young participants through elements
  • Conduct group preparation and safety briefings
  • Facilitate team building amongst all group members by communicating and providing parameter and challenging tasks with each element and promote challenge by choice

Requirements:

  • Work in a camp/outdoor setting and be in excellent physical health and able to handle all physical aspects of running the courses and conducting safety rescues
  • Facilitate groups of inner-city children ages 6-14
  • ACCT High Ropes Certification a plus (or willingness to attend Apple Ridge Farm sponsored High Ropes training)
  • First Aid / CPR / AED – Adult and Pediatric – Certification (or willing to participate in the training)
  • Trauma-informed Care Training (or willingness to participate in training)

 

Lifeguard/Swim Instructor – Part-time / Seasonal – $15/hr

Apple Ridge Farm is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, youth-serving organization that transforms the lives of underserved children and families through engagement in unparalleled educational, cultural, and outdoor experiences!

We seek a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor for seven weeks for our exciting academic summer camp in Copper Hill, VA. Transportation from Roanoke can be coordinated Additionally, our Lifeguards are expected to staff pool rental events on an as-needed basis, as rentals are booked and would require transportation. This position reports directly to the Program Director.

Duties:

  • Provide life safety for all campers and swimming pool users.
  • Teach swimming lessons for all sessions. Prepare a summary of activities and camper highlights at the end of camp.
  • Ensure all persons in the pool area are safe and accounted for.
  • General duties include maintaining the pool environment, including chemicals and vacuuming, and the cleanliness of the pool and locker room areas.
  • Be a role model at all times!

Requirements:

  • High School Student (Minimum age of 16)
  • Lifeguard with active certification or ability to become certified (Apple Ridge will sponsor) Must attend and pass lifeguard certification classes prior to camp.
  • Advanced swimmer – able to perform rescues as needed for both youth and adults.
  • Ability to monitor large groups of inner-city children ages 6-14 in a pool setting.
  • Ability to work outside all day in a pool environment.
  • Must be available to work June 12th – July 28th, 2023, M-F, 40 hours per week.
  • Must additionally work pool rental events as needed throughout the season until pool closure on Labor Day (Opportunities will be rotated between the lifeguards)

 

Venue Manager  –  Part Time  –  $20-$24/hr  –  24hrs/week (estimate)

Apple Ridge Farm is seeking an experienced Venue Manager to run our successful Airbnb business and grow our burgeoning wedding and event rental business. All of the proceeds from these rentals go towards supporting the mission of Apple Ridge Farm and its students. This position offers a great deal of flexibility in the work location. Some duties must be performed at our location in Copper Hill, VA, and other tasks can be performed remotely! Strong sales skills, solid facility and staff management, and the ability to think outside the box are necessary. Will require some night and weekend work for events. Site-specific training and supplies will be provided. Pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Payroll occurs bi-weekly on Thursdays. Potential to earn additional income by exceeding sales goals. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Duties:

  • Manage our four current Airbnb listings through the Airbnb app, including all communications with guests and regularly updating the calendar with upcoming rentals
  • Ensure each guest has a pleasant stay on the farm and serve as a hostess during their stay as needed.
  • Manage the cleaning staff of the B&Bs, including making sure each turnover is staffed and completed in a timely and clean fashion
  • Purchase all needed supplies and groceries for the cleaning staff to be able to turn over a B&B when needed and ensure an outstanding stay for our guests
  • Work with the Maintenance Tech and Executive Director on repairs that arise to keep the facilities in working order.
  • Sell the property to prospective clients for weddings, small and large group gatherings, and overnight stays. This includes marketing, research, and execution of events in order to grow ARF’s rental business to help support the mission of our work with youth.
  • Meet or exceed monthly, quarterly, and annual goals for facility rental revenue as established by the Executive Director.
  • Cultivate and manage event rentals at the farm. (Wedding/Large or Small Group Rentals/Multi-Night Stays etc.)
  • Give regular tours to prospective brides, corporations, and individuals to sell them on the benefits of choosing Apple Ridge Farm for their event rental needs.
  • Manage all contracts for event rentals with the clients and ARF Administration.
  • Coordinate needs for all functions at farm, such as weddings, meetings, retreats, etc.
  • Be the point person at the facility for all events (weddings, meetings, retreats, etc.). Meet the renters before each event to coordinate needs; provide access to buildings; train them on kitchen use; review checkout lists; coordinate parking needs, etc. Be on call during events. Assess the condition of buildings before and after each event.
  • Regularly assess the condition of all buildings and rental spaces at the facility. Maintain these resources in a showable and operational manner. Keep an up-to-date list of all maintenance needs.
  • Ensures security of company assets.
  • Other related duties and tasks as assigned by the manager.

Requirements:

  • Previous wedding/rental event space experience preferred
  • Previous experience in hospitality or Airbnb management preferred
  • Experience using the Airbnb app as a host preferred
  • This position requires strong attention to detail and an ability to communicate effectively with team members verbally and in written form.

Maintenance Technician – Part-Time – As-Needed – $18-$20/hr.

Apple Ridge Farm is seeking a qualified Maintenance Technician to perform facility maintenance and equipment repairs at our farm location in Copper Hill, VA, as needed. Hours may vary for this part-time position, but typically eight–ten hours per week will be needed. The job assignments will vary. A competitive hourly rate of pay is offered based on experience. Payroll occurs bi-weekly. Both private subcontractors and employees will be considered. The Maintenance Technician reports to the Executive Director.

Duties

Responsible for keeping the facilities operating and repairing any problems when they are discovered before they have a chance to worsen. Required to perform a wide range of repair tasks around a facility. Duties include fixing machinery, plumbing, heating, wiring, and performing inspections to include:

  • Performing routine maintenance around the buildings, such as fixing structural damage, for example, window, door, or wall repair, etc., applying preventative measures to ensure that the facilities are safe and functional at all times
  • Repairing broken or leaking plumbing to avoid water damage and restore full use of water fixtures
  • Servicing damaged electrical wiring when a shortage or severed wire occurs
  • Maintaining the building’s HVAC equipment to keep climate control in the facility functioning properly
  • Performing maintenance as possible to keep power equipment and vehicles functional
  • Installing new equipment and overseeing building upgrades according to the organization’s requests and to preserve the facility

Skills Required

Must possess a diverse mix of both hard and soft skills, particularly manual labor skills, including:

  • Plumbing knowledge to address leaks, clogs, or other drainage problems
  • Electrical wiring capabilities to manage problems with the building’s electricity
  • Carpentry ability to handle basic repairs around the building
  • Ability to provide groundskeeping of the facility lawn or other outdoor areas in need of maintenance
  • Attention to detail to ensure that all jobs are completed in an exemplary manner, and any potential hazards or warning signs of problems are not overlooked
  • Physical stamina to handle activity, carry heavy objects and use adders or other equipment to complete tasks
  • Ability to communicate maintenance needs to staff clearly and concisely and draft reports as necessary
  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate with the Facilities Director, Executive Director, and anyone they may come in contact with in a pleasant manner
  • Driver’s license, good driving record, and adequate transportation to Apple Ridge Farm
  • Must pass a VA background check to include violent crimes and crimes against minors.

Education and Training Required

High School Diploma or an equivalent degree such as a GED is required.  Plumbing, carpentry, electrical certifications, or comparable career experience is a plus!

Experience Required

Five years minimum experience as an electrician, plumber, builder, or general handyman is required.
