Open Position: Executive Director

Roanoke Education-Based Non-Profit is looking for an experienced candidate to fill the role of Executive Director. Requirements include: a four-year college degree; 5+ years in non-profit management; experience managing staff, logistics, and aspects of Human Resources; and, a dynamic leader with experience in strategic planning, fundraising, and organization financial management.   1. Board Governance: Works collaboratively with Board of Directors to fulfill the mission of Apple Ridge Farm
    1. Responsible for leading ARF in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
    2. Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  2. Financial Performance and Viability: Develops ample resources to guarantee and sustain the financial security of Apple Ridge Farm, both now and for the future
    1. Responsible for consistently and actively fundraising and engaging with current and prospective ARF donors.
    2. Responsible for expanding local revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations while simultaneously retiring any debt.
    3. Responsible for the fiscal integrity of Apple Ridge Farm, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements that accurately reflect the financial health of the organization.

  3. Operational Leadership & Management: Oversees operational responsibility for the seamless execution of Apple Ridge Farm’s mission

    1. Responsible for the hiring, retaining, and developing competent and qualified staff.

    2. Responsible for effectively and responsibly administering the operations of ARF, including, but not limited to:

      1. Maintaining consistent administrative and financial operations, policies and procedures, and;

      2. Creating and sustaining organization internal and external communications, office systems, and human resources policies.

    3. Responsible for actively engaging and energizing Apple Ridge Farm’s donors, volunteers, board members, event committees, alumni, and partnering organizations.

  4. Organization Strategy: Works with Board of Directors and staff of Apple Ridge Farm to ensure the mission of the organization is being actualized through programs, community outreach, and strategic planning

    1. Responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the strategic business planning process for the organization.

    2. Responsible for building partnerships in new markets if commensurate with strategic plan.

    3. Responsible for serving as an external presence that publishes and communicates organization program results with an emphasis on the successes of programs.

    4. Responsible for ensuring ongoing local programmatic excellence and rigorous program evaluation.


The Executive Director will:

  • Create annual organization budget to be presented to Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for recommendation to full BOD for adoption.

  • Present budget amendments in a timely manner to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for approval and ratification by the BOD.

  • Operate an annual budget.

  • Present a budget progress report to BOD bi-monthly at full BOD meetings.

  • Evaluate current staff and office structure of organization.

  • Develop reports for management and BOD including: go-forward 12-month cash flow; grant status to-date, facilities report to include status of physical assets.

  • Attend and participate in monthly BOD meetings, providing monthly reports and updates as requested and required.

  • Work with BOD to create strategic direction for both ongoing local operations as well as additional programmatic rollout and growth initiatives.

  • Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components.

  • Establish relationships with donors and community leaders. 

  • Study and refine all aspects of organization communication, from web presence to external relations, with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

  • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities. 

We are searching for someone with:

  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably with a concentration in business or non-profit leadership.

  • An unwavering commitment to the mission of Apple Ridge Farm.

  • Three or more years of proven non-profit leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience.

  • Knowledge of standard human resource (HR) practices.

  • A proven track record of leadership with an outcomes-based organization and staff.

  • Experience with development of operationalized strategies for next-stage growth.

  • Demonstrated success in managing high-quality, data-driven programs and evaluation.

  • Strong organizational management skills with the ability to develop and manage high-performance teams, and set and achieve strategic objectives.

  • Experience and competence working with a Board of Directors.

  • Skilled public speaking ability.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • An ability to effectively serve as the face of the organization to donors, volunteers, and the community.

  • Prior experience in writing and/or evaluating grant applications.

  • Prior marketing or public relations experience with the ability to engage diverse groups of stakeholders.

  • Excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

  • An action-oriented approach to business planning with an adaptable and innovative mind.

  • An ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

  • A passion for leadership, a high level of integrity, and a positive attitude.
